About Hetz Midget Arborvitae

‘Hetz Midget’ is a very slow-growing, globe-shaped arborvitae with dense evergreen foliage arranged in flat sprays. This dwarf selection stays useful in small gardens, foundation beds, borders, and containers, where its rounded form can be appreciated without shearing. ### Size and foliage Oregon State University describes ‘Hetz Midget’ as about 3–4 feet tall and somewhat wider, with very slow annual growth. The Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District lists a mature size of 3–4 feet tall by 4–5 feet wide and USDA Zones 3–7. These references support the existing 3–4-foot height, but the 4–5-foot spread conflicts with the existing one-meter width point, so the numeric width is left unresolved while the range label is updated. [Oregon State University’s profile](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/thuja-occidentalis-hetz-midget) and the [Jordan Valley Conservation Garden Park profile](https://conservationgardenpark.jvwcd.gov/plants/1673/hetz-midget-arborvitae) describe its habit, size, and growing conditions. ### Placement Plant it in sun or part shade in well-drained soil. It prefers reasonably even moisture and benefits from protection from drying conditions and exposed wind. Leave enough room for the wider mature spread rather than planting it as a narrow hedge. ## Maintenance Its slow growth and naturally rounded outline usually need little pruning. Remove damaged branches and shape lightly in early spring if needed.
