Thujopsis dolabrata, also called Hiba arborvitae, is a large evergreen conifer native to the moist forests of central Japan. NC State Extension describes cultivated trees as 30–50 feet tall with a dense pyramidal crown, glossy green scale-like foliage, flaking bark, and small brown cones that ripen in fall.
## Growing conditions
NC State recommends full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil with neutral to acidic pH. The species is drought-intolerant and benefits from shelter from wind and hot afternoon sun. The extension profile places it in USDA zones 5a–7b.
## Maintenance
Choose a site with ample room for the mature tree. Keep the root zone evenly moist, especially during dry weather, and avoid exposed windy locations. The tree is non-flowering; its seasonal interest comes from evergreen foliage, bark, and fall cones.
