About Tres Amigos Abelia

## Changing foliage, compact form Tres Amigos® abelia (*Abelia × grandiflora* 'Mincautri') provides a changing mix of foliage colors on a low, rounded shrub. Creamy yellow is prominent in spring; later, pink leaf margins and pink new shoots become more noticeable against green foliage. Small, fragrant white flowers appear in summer and continue into fall, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. Plan for about **2–3 feet of height and up to 5 feet of spread**. That wider footprint makes it useful at the front of a generous mixed border, along a low informal hedge, or in groups where its foliage can connect neighboring plants. It can also fill a large container. Keep it clear of narrow walkways so mature branches do not require constant clipping. Repeating a few plants lets the subtle seasonal color changes read across a bed. ## Planting and performance Grow in **USDA zones 6–9**, in full sun or partial sun with well-drained soil. In deeper shade, foliage color and flowering may be less distinct. Water during establishment, then adjust irrigation to rainfall, heat, and soil moisture. Established plants tolerate some drought, but severe stress can reduce both flowering and foliage quality. Although sometimes sold as evergreen, it is better understood as semi-evergreen across its growing range; winter leaf retention depends on climate. Deer resistance helps in browsed landscapes, but no shrub is completely protected from hungry animals. Light shaping in late winter or early spring is optional; flowers form on new growth. Remove damaged branches as needed and check watering during prolonged dry weather. Favor its natural mound over repeated shearing. Container plants need closer moisture checks than established shrubs in the ground.
