A slow-growing spiny fan palm, this named variety is accepted by Kew as *Trithrinax brasiliensis* var. *acanthocoma*. Its documented native range extends from southeastern Paraguay to southern Brazil, where it grows in subtropical conditions. The RHS profile under the synonym *T. acanthocoma* describes Trithrinax palms as hardy and tolerant of poor soils.
## Form and setting
The genus has fan-shaped, strong leaves and thorny fibres covering the stems. The RHS notes that some varieties develop clusters of yellow flowers, a feature that should not be assumed for every plant. This palm’s distinctive spiny form suits an open site where people will not brush against its stems.
## Maintenance
Allow generous clearance around the trunk and foliage, and handle leaves carefully. The broad RHS genus notes describe hardiness and poor-soil tolerance, but do not prescribe a watering schedule for this variety. Adapt irrigation to local rainfall and drainage rather than assuming all Trithrinax plants need the same moisture.
