Canadian Hemlock Tree

Canadian hemlock is an evergreen conifer with a dense, conical crown when young, fine green needles with pale undersides and small hanging cones. It is native to eastern and central North America and becomes a large tree; North Carolina Extension gives mature dimensions of about 40–70 feet tall and 25–35 feet wide. The species is sensitive to drought and drying conditions, and its conical form can serve as a specimen, screen or hedge where there is ample room. North Carolina Extension lists USDA hardiness zones 3a–7b. ## Maintenance Keep the soil evenly moist while the tree establishes and water during prolonged dry weather. Protect it from hot, drying sites. Prune selectively if it is being maintained as a hedge; where space permits, let the crown keep its natural outline.
