Tuff Stuff™ is a compact, mounded mountain hydrangea selected as Hydrangea serrata ‘MAK20’. Its lacecap flowers rebloom through summer, with color shifting from blue-purple in acidic soil to pink in more alkaline soil.
## In the Garden
The deciduous shrub reaches about 2–3 feet tall and wide and is listed for Zones 5–9. It suits borders, landscape beds, and specimen placement; its flowers are attractive to pollinators. The breeder describes blooms on both old and new wood, with new flowers continuing toward frost. The cultivar is protected as USPP 24,820, Can 4,527. See the [Proven Winners Tuff Stuff page](https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/hydrangea/tuff-stuff-reblooming-mountain-hydrangea-hydrangea-serrata).
## Maintenance
Plant in moist, well-drained soil; average water is usually sufficient, with extra moisture helpful during very hot weather. In hotter climates, afternoon shade is beneficial. Avoid routine pruning: remove dead wood in spring after new growth appears, and thin the oldest stems only as needed. NC State Extension notes that mountain hydrangeas bloom on previous-season stems, so light pruning protects flowering. See its [Hydrangea serrata guide](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/hydrangea-serrata/).
