Discovery elm is a named Japanese elm selection with a symmetrical upright, vase-shaped crown and dark green leaves that turn yellow in fall. Its mature height and spread of about 35–40 feet require generous room for the canopy. ## Landscape Use
Use it as a large shade or street tree where the mature crown can spread without crowding buildings, walks, or overhead utilities. Its vase-shaped form suits broad lawns and open planting strips.
## Growing Conditions
Plant in full sun. The tree is described as adaptable to soil and is hardy in USDA zones 3–7. The cultivar is reported to resist Dutch elm disease and elm leaf beetles, though resistance does not remove the need to monitor tree health. ## Seasonal Interest
The foliage stays green through the growing season before turning yellow in autumn. Its small flowers are not a major ornamental feature.
## Maintenance
Allow enough space for the eventual crown and water during establishment. Check young branches periodically and remove damaged or crossing growth while the tree is dormant.
