About Vanilla Spice® Summersweet

Vanilla Spice® is a deciduous summersweet cultivar selected for large, fragrant white flower spikes in summer. Its botanical denomination is ‘Caleb’ (U.S. Plant Patent PP21589), and the existing height, spread, and zones match the breeder’s published ranges of 3–6 feet and USDA 4–9. [Spring Meadow Nursery](https://springmeadownursery.com/plantfinder/vanilla-spice-16270) describes glossy green foliage and flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. ## Placement and Soil Plant in full sun to part shade in moist to wet, acidic soil; it also tolerates some dryness after establishment. The plant’s upright-to-rounded form and mature size work in shrub borders, foundations, or rain-garden edges where soil remains moist. More sun generally supports heavier bloom, while shade is suitable where moisture is dependable. ## Seasonal Interest The principal display is the fragrant summer bloom. The cultivar’s white flowers provide a contrast with its glossy green leaves; as a deciduous shrub it drops foliage in winter. Keep the existing range labels because the breeder gives approximate ranges rather than a single mature point. ## Maintenance Pruning is optional. If shaping is needed, prune in early spring before new growth. Water regularly while establishing and during extended dry periods, especially in sunnier exposures.
