Verbascum ‘Plum Smokey’ is a compact, rosette-forming mullein grown for smoky purple flower spikes above grey-green foliage. Terra Nova describes an 8-inch foliage height, 12-inch width, and 16-inch flowering height; the [Royal Horticultural Society](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/211145/verbascum-plum-smokey/details) also describes a compact perennial with summer flowers. [Terra Nova](https://www.terranovanurseries.com/product/verbascum-plum-smokey/) confirms patent PP16156 and USDA zones 5–9.
## Garden Use
Place this short-lived perennial near the front or middle of a sunny border, in a gravel garden, or among plants that enjoy sharply drained soil. The low basal rosette gives way to slender flower stems, so allow room for its 12-inch spread and avoid burying the crown with mulch. Purple blooms contrast well with silver or fine-textured foliage.
## Growing Conditions
Choose full sun and open, well-drained soil. The RHS lists chalk, loam, or sand and alkaline conditions; Terra Nova recommends excellent porosity and notes average garden water needs. Once established, the plant tolerates relatively dry conditions, but it should not remain waterlogged, especially through winter. The RHS reports summer flowering and a sometimes short-lived perennial habit.
## Maintenance
Remove faded flower spikes to keep the planting tidy and limit seedlings. Leave the basal rosette until it dies back naturally, then clear old foliage. Keep the crown on the dry side in winter. Terra Nova lists this selection as deer resistant; browsing pressure can still vary.
