About Longleaf Speedwell

Longleaf speedwell (Veronica longifolia) is an upright, clump-forming perennial with narrow leaves and densely packed spikes of small blue to purplish-blue flowers. The tall stems bring vertical structure to a border and provide nectar and pollen for pollinating insects. ## Size and placement The species generally reaches 2–4 feet tall with a 1–2 foot spread, though some references describe plants closer to 3 feet in flower. Grow it in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil; loam is suitable. It is hardy in USDA zones 4–8 and works well in flower borders, cottage gardens, and cut-flower plantings. ## Bloom and wildlife Flowering extends from summer into early autumn. The flower spikes are useful for cutting, and the species is included in the RHS Plants for Pollinators list. In windy locations, place the upright stems among neighboring plants for support. ## Maintenance Cut the stems down after flowering. Divide established clumps in autumn or spring if more plants are wanted. See the [RHS species profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/18847/veronica-longifolia/details/) and [Missouri Botanical Garden Plant Finder](https://plantfinder.mobot.org/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?basic=on&isprofile=0&taxonid=298772) for the species’ growing conditions, mature range, flowering, and wildlife value.
