## Garden Use
Give this rapid-growing plant plenty of room in a sunny home landscape. It can be trained as a small single-trunk tree or grown as a large shrub, and the species is commonly about 10–15 feet tall. Deer resistance, established drought tolerance, and moderate salt tolerance suit it to a range of garden settings.
## Growing Conditions
Plant in well-drained soil; the species grows in clay, loam, or sandy soils and tolerates acidic, neutral, or alkaline conditions. Water regularly while establishing, then reduce watering once established. Very wet soil can contribute to root rot.
## Maintenance
Prune in early spring because flowers form on new wood. Removing faded flowers can encourage continued bloom; stronger pruning after flowering can improve the next display. Its freely reseeding habit and dry fruit litter are worth considering when choosing a site.
