About California Fan Palm

California fan palm is an evergreen desert palm native to southeastern California and neighboring desert regions. Its single, thick trunk supports a crown of broad fan-shaped leaves, while older dead fronds may remain as a shaggy skirt below the living crown. ## Growing Conditions Plant Washingtonia filifera in full sun and extremely well-drained soil. It tolerates drought, but excess irrigation and wet conditions can lead to trunk or root rot. The species has a moderate growth rate and suits dry landscapes, containers, or mass plantings. [University of Florida IFAS Extension](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/ST669). ## Form and Foliage The upright palm is usually single-trunked, with green fan leaves and inconspicuous yellow, white, cream, or gray flowers. Its small black fruit is reported not to attract wildlife. Persistent dead lower leaves can provide rodent roosting cover and are a fire hazard; local requirements may call for their removal. ## Maintenance Remove dead fronds where required and prune to maintain strong structure. Keep the root zone well drained and avoid over-irrigation, especially in rainy climates.
