Wine and Roses Weigela

Wine & Roses® weigela combines rosy pink spring flowers with glossy purple foliage that holds color through the growing season. The Proven Winners selection is Weigela florida ‘Alexandra’, a deciduous shrub that can bloom again during summer. Its flowers attract hummingbirds and its branches can be cut for arrangements. ## Landscape Use Allow room for a mature shrub about 4–5 feet tall and wide. Use it as a colorful foundation planting, border shrub, hedge, or mass planting where the foliage can contrast with green or gold neighbors. Full sun gives the darkest foliage and the greatest bloom count, while part shade is tolerated. ## Soil and Water Plant in well drained soil and provide regular moisture, especially while the shrub establishes. It adapts to many soil types but does not suit ground that stays wet. The plant is rated for USDA zones 4–8. ## Maintenance If pruning is needed, prune just after flowering because the main spring display grows on old wood. Proven Winners recommends occasional rejuvenation pruning by removing some of the oldest branches at ground level.
