About Wisteria Tree

Wisteria is a genus of vigorous, long-lived, fragrant-flowered climbers; its species differ in flower color, raceme length and flowering sequence. Most can be trained on a wall, pergola or arch, while a free-standing standard can be grown in a border or large container. ([RHS Wisteria genus guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/wisteria); [RHS growing guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/wisteria/growing-guide)) ## Garden use Choose a sunny wall or strong garden structure for a climber, or train it as a standard when a more compact outline suits the space. The RHS describes flowering in late spring, with occasional summer flowers; Japanese, Chinese and silky wisterias differ in raceme length and in whether flowers open before or with their leaves. Mid-green foliage turns yellow in autumn. ([RHS Wisteria genus guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/wisteria)) ## Growing conditions Plant in well-drained soil and full sun for the best flowering; light shade is tolerated but may reduce blooms. Water well during dry periods, especially while establishing and in sandy soil. Avoid sites that stay waterlogged or are deeply shaded. ([RHS genus guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/wisteria); [RHS growing guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/wisteria/growing-guide)) ## Maintenance Wisteria grows vigorously and benefits from pruning twice a year, in July or August and again in January or February, to keep growth in bounds and encourage flowering. Provide sturdy support for climbing stems. ([RHS pruning guide](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/wisteria/pruning-guide))
