About Purple Japanese Wisteria

Purple Japanese wisteria bears long, fragrant lilac-purple flower clusters above green foliage that turns yellow in autumn. It can be trained as a flowering small tree or grown on a strong garden structure; its mature outline depends on support and pruning. ## Growing conditions Grow in full sun for the best flowering, in moist but well-drained soil. Japanese wisteria is vigorous, so choose a sturdy support and give it room as it develops. [RHS Plants identifies Black Dragon with Kokuryū and describes its lilac trusses](https://www.rhsplants.co.uk/plants/_/wisteria-floribunda-kokury/classid.2000042697/); [Morton Arboretum gives Japanese wisteria care and seasonal guidance](https://mortonarb.org/plant-and-protect/trees-and-plants/japanese-wisteria/). ## Garden use Use it as a spring-flowering focal point where its hanging clusters can be seen clearly. Wisteria stems need substantial support, whether maintained as a standard or trained over a pergola, arbor, or wall. ## Maintenance Prune twice a year to manage the framework and encourage flowering: shorten excess summer growth, then reduce shoots again in winter. Keep mature stems securely tied to their support, and keep seeds and other plant parts away from children and pets. [RHS pruning guidance](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/wisteria/pruning-guide).
