American wisteria blooms later than Asian varieties. The fragrant light purple flowers are slightly smaller but will sporadically rebloom from summer through early fall, turning into interesting seed pods. Blooms appear on new growth so prune heavily in the spring. While the American varieties are less invasive, they are still strong climbing vines that need a sturdy trellis, fence or pergola. *All parts of this plant are toxic if ingested by humans or pets.*
