About Foxtail Palm

Foxtail palm is a single-trunked Australian palm with a smooth, ringed gray trunk, a green crownshaft, and arching fronds whose densely arranged leaflets create a full, plume-like crown. Mature palms can reach about 30 feet, and the species performs best in warm, frost-free climates. ### Growing Conditions Plant in full sun or light partial shade in well-drained soil. Water at the base during active growth; established palms tolerate some drought, while overhead watering can encourage leaf-spot problems. The UF/IFAS palm profile notes that cold exposure and alkaline soils can limit performance. ### Garden Use Use it as a specimen palm in a warm landscape, or grow a young plant in a large container where it can be protected from cold. White flowers are followed by orange-red fruit. Its tropical crown works well as a focal point in open lawns and large garden beds. ## Maintenance Provide ample water at the root zone during dry periods, avoid overhead irrigation, and protect the palm from cold. Remove only dead or damaged fronds. [UF/IFAS](https://ask.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/FR304)
