About Soaptree Yucca

## Landscape value Soaptree yucca (*Yucca elata*) is a slow-growing evergreen of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Its narrow leaves form a rounded crown, and mature plants can develop a trunk with tall clusters of pale flowers. Use it as a sculptural accent in a sunny dry landscape, allowing space away from paths. ## Growing conditions [Oregon State University](https://landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu/plants/yucca-elata) describes a height of roughly 4–15 feet and notes that the species is slow growing. The [New Mexico Fire Wise guide](https://www.emnrd.nm.gov/sfd/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/FireWisePlantMaterialsNMSU.pdf) and [Arizona Firewise guide](https://extension.arizona.edu/sites/extension.arizona.edu/files/pubs/az1289.pdf) list full sun, very low to low water, and heights of 3–15 feet. Provide drainage and water during establishment, then adjust irrigation to local conditions. ## Maintenance and placement Allow clearance around the stiff, pointed leaves and use protective gloves when handling them. Remove dead leaves and flower stalks as appropriate to local guidance; accumulated dry material can add fuel. Both state guides provide elevation and placement recommendations for firewise landscaping. ## San Luis Obispo County The county's [approved plant list](https://www.slocounty.ca.gov/departments/planning-building/forms-documents/environmental-forms-and-documents/plants-information/county-approved-plant-list) names *Yucca elata* F2. Follow its placement, irrigation and maintenance guidance. ## Arizona — UA elevation and care conditions (2026 audit) The [University of Arizona guide](https://extension.arizona.edu/sites/extension.arizona.edu/files/pubs/az1289.pdf), revised December 2011, page 4, lists Yucca elata (soaptree yucca) in its shrubs table. It prints water needs VL-L, sun/shade S and mature height 3-15 feet. Its elevation recommendations are 3,000 ft: Y; 4,000 ft: Y; 5,000 ft: Y; 6,000 ft: Y; 7,000 ft: N; 8,000 ft: N; 9,000 ft: N. Table codes: VL=very low, L=low, M=moderate and H=high water; S=full sun, PS=partial sun, Sh=shade; in grass height entries B=bunchgrass and S=sod forming. Elevation codes Y=yes, N=not recommended and ?=unknown or doubtful. Elevations are Arizona source suitability bands, not USDA hardiness zones; listed heights and moisture needs are contextual rather than universal limits. Maintain suitable moisture, remove dead branches and litter, separate planting groups and keep plants nearest structures small and widely spaced. The guide cautions that all vegetation is potential fuel and no plant is fireproof. Check local growing conditions and current defensible-space requirements; preserve separate regional source ratings.
