Rocky Mountain zinnia is a low, spreading wildflower with bright yellow flowers and fine green foliage. It is native to dry, rocky parts of the Southwest and brings a long season of color to rock gardens, slopes, and naturalistic plantings.
## Growing Conditions
NC State describes this species as dense and mounding, typically 4–8 inches tall and wide, and hardy in zones 4a–8b. It grows in full sun or partial shade and suits clay, sand, and shallow rocky soils that dry well. The flowers bloom from May through October and attract bees, butterflies, and moths. See the [NC State Rocky Mountain zinnia profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/zinnia-grandiflora/common-name/rocky-mountain-zinnia/).
## Maintenance
Once established, it tolerates dry conditions and needs little routine care. Avoid wet soil, and allow the spreading clumps room to form a broad, low cover.
