About Star Gold - Zinnia

Star Gold is a low-growing Zinnia angustifolia in PanAmerican Seed’s Star Series, with single yellow flowers edged in orange. It reaches about 14 inches tall and 8 inches wide, making it suitable for the front of a sunny annual bed or a compact pollinator planting. ## Garden use Wisconsin Extension lists Star Gold among narrow-leaf zinnias and describes the Star Series as flowering from summer until frost. Plant it in full sun, where its warm-colored flowers can brighten a border or pollinator garden. Zinnias generally grow best in well-drained soil; this species is very drought tolerant and deer resistant once established. See the [University of Wisconsin Extension zinnia guide](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/zinnias/) and the [PanAmerican Seed 2014 catalog](https://www.panamseed.com/documents/catalogs/13123-2014PanAmericanSeed-Catalogue.pdf). ## Growing conditions Choose a sunny site and allow room for the compact plant to form its low mound. The species account reports that flowers attract pollinators and that plants tolerate dry conditions. Water new transplants while they establish, then adjust to rainfall and local heat; avoid leaving roots in saturated soil. ## Maintenance Remove faded flowers to keep the display tidy and encourage continued flowering. Check plants periodically during hot weather and water if the soil around young or container-grown roots dries out.
