About Zinnias

Zinnias are warm-season flowering annuals in the daisy family, with cultivars that vary widely in flower form, color, and size. They fit sunny borders, meadows, containers, and cutting or pollinator gardens where a long season of flowers is wanted. ## Garden use Grow zinnias in full sun and average, well-drained garden soil, with air moving freely around the plants. They can be planted in borders, meadows, containers, or cutting gardens, and also provide nectar for butterflies and hummingbirds; songbirds use the seeds. The [NC State Extension Zinnia profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/zinnia/) describes bloom and foliage interest from spring through fall. ## Growing conditions The genus includes many cultivars with different sizes and colors, so select a specific cultivar when a particular height or flower color is needed. Keep the soil moist while plants establish, then water according to local rainfall and heat. Good air circulation helps limit powdery mildew. ## Maintenance Remove faded flowers to encourage additional blooms, while leaving some seed heads for birds.
