Mandarin is an evergreen citrus tree with fragrant white flowers and sweet orange fruit. The RHS describes the Mandarin Group’s spreading, branched form and container culture in cool or temperate climates; a species profile reports flowers in spring and winter. ## Growing conditions
Give the tree bright light, shelter from strong winds, and well-drained soil. The RHS lists loam and partial shade; UC IPM recommends full sun for citrus, so choose a bright site with protection from hot sun. Avoid waterlogged ground and avoid placing citrus where it receives frequent lawn irrigation. [UC IPM citrus cultural tips](https://ipm.ucanr.edu/home-and-landscape/cultural-tips-for-growing-citrus/)
## Seasonal care
During spring and summer growth, water freely; in winter, water sparingly. The RHS recommends citrus fertilizer according to the product directions. The species profile reports USDA hardiness zones 9–11; cultivar, rootstock and local exposure can affect cold response.
## Maintenance
Only minimal pruning is generally needed. Remove damaged or crossing shoots as needed and use clean tools. Follow local citrus guidance for cold protection and pest monitoring.
