Create design onlineAbout Steeplechase Arborvitae Western Red Cedar
Steeplechase is a dense, broadly pyramidal hybrid arborvitae selected for finely textured, dark green foliage. The American Conifer Society lists mature dimensions near 20 feet tall by 8 feet wide, matching the catalog size for this cultivar.
## Garden Use
Use this evergreen as a tall screen, hedge, or specimen where its upright outline has room to develop. It offers a more finely textured form than Green Giant, but its mature height still calls for careful placement away from buildings, paths, and overhead lines.
## Growing Conditions
Choose a site that can accommodate the mature crown and allow the root zone to establish before dry weather. The American Conifer Society lists growth near 2 feet per year, so spacing and screening plans should account for steady growth. The plant patent describes Steeplechase as a branch mutation of Green Giant with a denser, bushier habit and finely textured foliage.
## Maintenance
Prune selectively to maintain clearance or shape, avoiding repeated hard cuts into old wood. The cultivar is covered by U.S. Plant Patent 16,094, issued November 1, 2005.
